History of Blaxploitation

“Blaxploitation is a film genre that emerged in the United States in the early 1970s when many exploitation films were made that targeted the urban black audience; the word itself is a portmanteau of the words “black” and “exploitation.”

I wonder, what blaxploitation has really contributed to African American film. Considering the films of this genre were focused on the portrayal of ghettos, prostitutes, drug dealers, and the assumed associated moral values, it seems not much positive representation was offered.  

My review of this genre is in process. I will highight it’s positive contribution via the integration of soul music into American culuture, and it’s provision of opportunity for black actors, directors and writers. This genre also offered negative effects all of which are forthcoming. The review will be based on at least twenty-five films.

In the interim, what has this genre really contributed? Despite the representation of excellent actors, writers and directors, what other positive ideas have been offered? What negative elements remain in today’s African-American film?
